Obama Makes Himself a Stranger in 10 Red States

Texas, a state with changing demographics that could wind up as fertile ground for Democrats in the future, will get its fifth visit today. Arizona, which finds itself in similar territory, has gotten four, as have Louisiana and Iowa.

Still, with 18 months left in his term, Obama has visited 38 states -- but President George W. Bush visited 39 in his first year. Bush's father hit all 50 states in his single term, according to Knoller; President Clinton needed two full terms to get to all 50.

But how do the Republicans in the red states feel about not getting personal attention from Obama?

Aaron Cooper, the spokesman for Oklahoma GOP Gov. Mary Fallin, had this to say: "As Governor Fallin has made clear to members of the Obama administration in the past, the federal government's overreach, intrusive rules and regulations, tax hikes and refusal to address the national debt are all of great concern to her and directly impact the citizens of Oklahoma. She would certainly welcome the opportunity to continue that conversation with the president should he decide to visit."

In Tennessee, a spokesman for the new Republican governor, Bill Haslam, didn't have a comment to offer. He said no one in his administration knew whether Obama had been formally invited to the Volunteer State since taking office. Indeed, no one seems to be looking for a venue to attack the president right now.

And what about blue Vermont, where Obama is basically assured of those three electoral votes in 2012? In a report on new Democratic Gov. Peter Shumlin's first 100 days in office, the third statistic cited by his office notes that he has had three meetings with President Obama since being sworn in, though none has been in the Green Mountain State.

"We've never formally invited the president to come up to Vermont," spokeswoman Bianca Slota said, but she noted that Shumlin supports his agenda and hopes he'll visit when there's time.

"We hope he knows he's welcome up here," she said.
