Daniels Spoke to Bush About Presidential Bid

By Alex Katz

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels said on "Fox & Friends" Tuesday morning that he has spoken to former President George W. Bush about a possible White House bid in 2012. However, Daniels declined to comment on the details of their conversation.

"Well, that's between him and me," said Daniels, who served as Bush's director of the Office of Management and Budget from 2001 to 2003.

Daniels has been thrust into the spotlight as outside groups and conservative pundits alike have lobbied the governor to strongly consider running in 2012.

When asked by Fox News if he'd like to run for president, however, he joked, "Would I like to? No. What sane person would like to?"

When pushed further, Daniels said he still hasn't made a decision.

"Believe it or not, I'm not one of those people who's ever sat around scheming and dreaming. Never entered my mind, but I've agreed at the behest of a lot of people to give it some thought."

With the Indiana legislative session now wrapped up, Daniels said he knows that he owes people an answer.

The two-term governor, who will not be participating in Thursday's GOP primary debate in South Carolina, also lauded President Obama for pursuing a mission that ultimately killed Osama bin Laden this past weekend.

But he noted that the focus will have to shift back to the country's fiscal affairs, touting his state's achievement of staying out of debt.

"We believe in paying our bills where I come from, and we have stayed in the black the old-fashioned way: We spent less money than we took in."
