Obama Leads GOP Hopefuls in National Poll

By Kyle Adams

President Obama leads several potential Republican presidential candidates in hypothetical general election matchups, according to a new national poll from Public Policy Polling (D).

He tops former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee by 5 percent, 48-43, and leads former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney 47 percent to 41 percent. Obama holds more commanding leads over former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (54 percent to 36 percent) and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (52 percent to 38 percent).

PPP (D) also tested President Obama against New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who has said repeatedly that he is not running for president in 2012. Obama led Christie 48 percent to 39 percent, according to the poll.

PPP (D) surveyed 532 registered voters nationally from April 7-10. The poll has a margin of error of +/- 4.3 percent.
