Dems Preparing for Government Shutdown

By Erin McPike

Democrats in Congress are preparing for a government shutdown, a congressional aide told RealClearPolitics Friday morning.

An aide to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi told a meeting of Democratic chiefs of staff in the House that there is a 90 percent chance the government will shut down, and they need to plan accordingly.

This afternoon, Virginia Democratic Rep. Jim Moran introduced legislation that would keep members of Congress from collecting a paycheck in the event of a government shutdown, as has been threatened.

Current law allows lawmakers and the president to continue collecting their pay through mandatory appropriations spending.

"If we're going to throw federal employees, including our staffs, out on the street, we should be right there with them," Moran said in a statement. "In the event of a shutdown, members should be eating peanut butter and jelly like everyone else."

"That entirely depends on Sens. Reid and Schumer," said Michael Steel, spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner. "Look, Washington Democrats are rooting for a government shutdown, hoping to take partisan advantage. Republicans, on the other hand, are listening to the American people, who want us to cut spending - not shut the government down."
