Dem Committees Outraised GOP Rivals in August

All three of the Democrats' national party committees brought in more cash than their Republican counterparts did in August, according to reports filed with the Federal Election Committee on Monday.

The Democratic White House has been a fundraising boon to the Democratic House and Senate campaign committees, which have benefited from transfers. President Obama's fundraising prowess has given the Democratic Party the ability to spread money around and keep all of its levers even or ahead of GOP groups as Election Day nears.

Together, the trio of Democratic committees that must file reports with the FEC pulled in a combined $6.2 million more than the collective GOP committees. The Democratic National Committee performed the best of any of the committees with its $10.9 million haul last month; the DNC's total was $3.1 million more than the RNC's August influx of $7.8 million.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee raised $1.7 million more than the National Republican Congressional Committee, at $8.3 million in August to $6.6 million; and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee brought in $1.4 million more than the National Republican Senatorial Committee, $7.4 million to $6 million.

The RNC spent $8.6 million in August and carries $1.2 million in debt; the committee began September with a war chest of $4.7 million. By contrast, the DNC spent far more than its Republican counterpart, pushing out $13.9 million the month before the Labor Day benchmark. Despite the heavier spending, the DNC ended the month $8.7 million ahead in available cash with $13.4 million on hand, although the DNC is carrying $8.4 million in debt and took out a loan of $5 million last month to get there. The DNC was also able to make $5.9 million in transfers to other party committees, while the RNC sent $1.5 million to affiliated groups.

What the numbers may also suggest is that the DNC will have to boost Senate races in the final run-up to Election Day, because the DCCC is much farther ahead of the NRCC in cash on hand while a far tighter money race has taken shape at the Senate level.

The DCCC ended August with $39 million in cash on hand and still has not taken on any debt. The NRCC had $25.6 million in the bank -- $13.4 million less than the DCCC. Republican operatives point out that independent expenditure spending has begun, and that is what is contributing to a cash-on-hand figure that is smaller. However, the DCCC spent more than the NRCC in August, $5 million to $3.1 million.

On the Senate side, the Democrats have less on hand by $1.6 million. The NRSC has $24.5 million on hand compared with the DSCC's $22.9 million. But the Democrats' Senate campaign arm spent a hefty amount to put the committee in that position by dropping $7 million in August. The NRSC spent just $2.6 million last month.
