Kirk, Giannoulias Deadlocked in Ill. Senate Race

By Scott Conroy - August 11, 2010

According to the latest RasmussenReports poll, Republican Mark Kirk and Democrat Alexi Giannoulias each garner the support of 40 percent of likely voters. Twelve percent of the 750 Illinois residents surveyed Monday remain undecided.

In what has been among the most high-profile Senate races of the cycle, Kirk and Giannoulias have remained neck-and-neck for several months.

The race has been marked by particularly negative campaigning from both sides: Giannoulias' camp has repeatedly highlighted Kirk’s embellishments of his military record, while the Kirk campaign has relentlessly hit Giannoulias for loans made by his family-owned bank.

On Monday, Giannoulias slammed Kirk with a new campaign ad that again painted the Republican as a liar. Not to be outdone, Kirk followed suit with public remarks that sought to link Giannoulias - via a loan from his family's bank - to former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

According to the Rasmussen poll, Kirk is viewed very or somewhat favorably by 42 percent of likely voters, while 39 percent have a favorable opinion of Giannoulias.

Last week, President Obama appeared at a Chicago event on behalf of Giannoulias, helping raise a reported $1 million for his former basketball buddy who's been lagging behind Kirk in the money race.

Obama’s job approval rating in Illinois stands at 54 percent, according to Rasmussen, which is 11 points higher than his nationwide average.
