The RCP Poll Average for the Georgia Governor's race has Democrat Roy Barnes leading likely GOP nominee Karen Handel by 1.7 points. He also leads Congressman Nathan Deal, who heads into a runoff with Handel, by .3 points. Because of this, RCP now rates the race as a Tossup.
But it is important to bear in mind that polls are only a snapshot of where a race stands, not where it is going to go. Looking at the polling in the state, former Governor Barnes seems stuck at about 45% in the polls, and as a well-known officeholder it isn't clear that he has much room for growth. This is consistent with what the PPP polling from February suggests (the last poll for which we have crosstabs). Only 13% of Democrats were undecided, versus 20% of Republicans and 29% of Independents. I suspect that as the campaign wears on almost all of the Republicans, and probably most of the Independents (given the polling we've seen elsewhere) will decide to vote Republican.
