But even in South Carolina, the laws of navigation apply, and here is one that is often overlooked: The establishment candidate usually wins. “I think a lot of punditry on this thing doesn’t make any sense,” said Bill Carrick, a veteran Democratic consultant who grew up in Aiken as a contemporary of Lee Atwater’s and now plies his trade in Los Angeles.
